Canterbury Sunburst Fleet

2016/17 Season

NEWS: Canterbury Branch, NZ Sunburst Association, Notice of AGM

Welcome to the website of the Canterbury Sunburst Fleet!

The Sunburst fleet sails at various clubs in Christchurch, New Zealand.

On this site you will (eventually!) be able to find all currently activities within the fleet, who to contact, where to sail, as well as tips, tricks and tuning advice.

The Sunburst is a 3.5m double-handed sailing dinghy designed in 1964 by Jack Brooke of Auckland.

It is the most popular double-handed class in New Zealand, and is sailed and raced in virtually all centres throughout the country.

The boats is easily sailed, but with the spinnaker it is a challenge to race well, and as such attracts sailors from beginners through to Olympic representatives and professional yachtsmen/women, who all relish the superb sailing characteristics of this fantastic boat.

With over 1800 boats built, fleets of up to 70 boats are regularly attracted to the annual National Championships, with smaller fleets of 10 - 20 attending both the North, and South Island Championships.

In Canterbury, the largest fleets sail regularly at the Waimakariri and Pleasant Point clubs, with smaller numbers regularly seen at Mt. Pleasant, Pigeon Bay & Christchurch YC.
